A Missive to the Liberals

Above all else, to thine own self be true,

And it must follow, as the night the day,

Thou canst not then be false to any [person]

– William Shakespeare

Dear Liberal Party MPs:

I appreciate you all did your best to maintain the moral and ethical high ground in the last election. That couldn’t have been easy, given the movement conservative tactics of the Cons.

The example we present to the World’s benefit will reflect what we do here at home, wrt human rights, poverty, pollution, and climate change. Let’s make sure we get it right.

It won’t be easy, because you have 5 provincial premiers who are given to misbehaving and misrepresenting the truth like spoiled children: only one of them is tickled by the election result and that one is playing on another turn of voter angst in Québec; the others cannot accept defeat of their federal con-cousins and continue to pout.

ALL OF THEM would rather threaten the dissolution of our Canada, the one which previous generations of young Canadians fought and died for. The movement conservatives from the U.S. have gained purchase as the Conservatives of Canada, but their approach to politics and governing is not, nor has it ever been, who we are.

All the best to the new flight of MPs. The task before them is no less daunting, and no less diminished in significance, than it was to Canada’s first Parliament.

Again, thank you for taking the high road. It is the only way leading to reconciliation and progress. It is very much in keeping with the spirit of Lester B. Pearson and Pierre Elliot Trudeau.
